My primary medium is soft pastel. I prefer pastel for a number of
reasons, it's directness of execution, the unmatched brilliance and
vibrancy of color, it's versatility and permanence. Pastel lends
itself to a variety of techniques from the simple blocking in of color
to complex layering and the use of broken color. My style has evolved
naturally from the interaction between the medium and my artistic
vision. I experiment with the possibilities of pastel. I find it the
ideal medium both for plein aire painting on location and for large
studio paintings.
My art is a natural extension of my interaction with my environment.
Whatever the subject I choose, landscape, portrait, figure or still
life, it is my intention to reach beyond the simple reflection of a
physical object, to communicate to the viewer on a deeper level. I
am interested in exploring the interplay of light, shadow, color and
texture in defining form and expressing the living energy of the
subject. An artist's gift is vision. My goal is to encourage people
to observe life more thoughtfully and to extend the visual experience
to global landscapes and cultures. My recent paintings are inspired
by life in Colorado and artist's journeys to Burgundy, Italy,
Thailand, Mexico, India. Belize and Canada.
