"One can approach a piece of wood simply as raw material and use it to bring an artistic idea to life,” or as world famous wood sculptor Hugh Beckham says, "One can allow the wood to dictate its own final form."
This artist’s work is predominantly stylized wherein he creates a feeling rather than a detailed representation. He intentionally plans for the realism to come from the eye and mind of the person viewing the artwork. In selecting his wood, Hugh gives special attention to its color and grain. His finishes add the final touch of beauty to the wood’s own natural texture, highlighting its uniqueness.
Hugh had been forced to abandon his beloved sculpting in 1999 when he was struck with a debilitating hand tremor. He had resigned himself to the role of observer until the miracle of modern medicine pushed the tremors into remission which has allowed him to return to his mallet and chisel.
"Feeling is the basis for all good art"
