Creating art is my time to splash around in the sea of my imagination. These paintings are my path to restoring the lost enthusiasm and delight of my childhood. I had simply forgotten how to play. I’m remembering that play is our spontaneous, sacred relationship with the world. Neither goal-oriented nor reasonable, my painting process is an organic exploration and celebration. I love following my breath through every muscle in my body as I swish an oil pastel and swipe with a paint brush. My joy is the playful dance of paint.
Over the past two years, the images that continuously flow from my paint brushes are circular. I don’t feel right unless the shapes are all connected in circular patterns. These circles echo my conception of life’s journey. I’m inspired by Native American traditions that revere the medicine wheel as the eternal dance. The medicine wheel is balance, wholeness, and the subtle spin of constant change. Unlike modern linear conceptions of time that delineate specific points in time, the circularity of my medicine wheel paintings is an exploration, not a definition. Explorers don’t know what they will find: that’s the fun. My painting explorations are not representations of any grail or goal. If anything, they exist as inspiration for you to explore your own inner space, not to find something, but simply to enjoy the travels. I thrive on this inexplicable mystery while discovering something new about myself and my art with each painting.
