VIRGINIA BARTLETT

Artist Statement:
A native of Richmond, Virginia where she majored in Fine Art at the College of William and Mary Virginia has been interested in art since a small child. In 1976 she began to seriously study with outstanding artists at workshops to continue to grow to become the best possible craftsman.

"I feel after the techniques are mastered and have become second nature, an artist is free to express what she or he feels on canvas or paper without being hampered by having to think of the mechanics and communicating the artist’s feelings about a subject to the viewer is what fine art is all about."

Having lived in Pagosa Springs for twenty three years the beauty of Colorado has been her inspiration as she thoroughly enjoys working out of doors sketching and painting “en plein aire” trying to capture the essence of the subject rather than a photographic likeness. Painting predominantly in oil, landscapes and florals are her favorite subjects however when working in watercolor she sometimes creates collages, assembling torn, colored and textures pieces of watercolor paper into landscape scenes.

Her paintings have been juried into and won awards in exhibits in Texas, New Mexico and Colorado and in 2002 she had paintings juried into the Gateway National Juried Show of Farmington at which she won an award and the Four Corners Regional Show in Farmington. She has also had paintings juried into the Colorado Art Open in Golden, Colorado in 2003.

Virginia’s painting, “Golden Summer”, was selected for June in the 2006 Pagosa Springs Arts Council’s calendar.

Currently she is teaching oil painting and watercolor painting in Pagosa Springs and serves on the Board of the Fred Harman Museum as a Director and is a member of the Pagosa Springs Arts Council, The Northwest New Mexico Arts Council and the Durango Arts Center.
